Providing a suitable level of heritage protection for the Vega Baja archaeological site
The Vega Baja was declared a Cultural Asset (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Archaeological Site, by decree of the regional government in April 1992. Listing approval cited the existence of archaeological remains from the Roman, Visigothic and Medieval periods.
The legal protection that comes with this designation establishes not only the value of the asset, but also how the public authorities with responsibility for cultural matters should manage that asset, irrespective of other considerations. The land almost certainly has archaeological remains of interest related to the cultural and historical development of the area and this has been given full consideration.
We propose that the site should become an Archaeological Park open to the public. We hope to make it easy for the public to visit the site by opening it up several times a year: work has already started on this.
Equipment and facilities necessary for the work are gradually being put in place. Arrangements for access, signposting and safety measures are in hand.
The archaeological site is an integral part of the main project for the Vega Baja. It will contribute to the urban growth process, having cultural facilities and being landscaped.
The general plan below shows the road network proposed for the zone through and around the site, and the locations of cultural and educational facilities in the area.
