Landscape, Intrinsic Value of the Vega and its Relationship with the Historic City of Toledo

New thoughts about landscape have presented new meanings for the term, generally involving several different concepts. First there is the concept of landscape as a cultural reality, dependent on what people think of it. For writers like Schama, landscape does not exist as an objective reality. “Landscape exists neither objectively nor in itself; we can say then that it is a relative; it is related to what people think of it, to what they perceive and to what they say about it. It is a kind of mental grille, a mental veil that the human being places between him and the world”. This idea of landscape contemplated by the artist to produce a subjective image is apparent in many of the images produced of Toledo city, especially those of the Romantic period, and in numerous paintings.

But landscape can also be seen as territory produced and manipulated by societies, as the physical and live surroundings of human societies. Landscape is the expression of a relationship between man and the surface of the earth, an active and practical relationship with transformation of the environment by man. The land bears “a continuous mark of man”.

Landscape is, too, the experience of man’s encounter with his surroundings; it is identified with the human ecumene. Here there is an encounter between a humanized territory and an environment, between a space of nature and a space of human activity. Landscape with the idea of territory. There is a certain overall order to the elements that make up this man-made landscape but it is, at the same time, a reality that is dynamic and constantly evolving, and passed through by trends that change over time.

Landscape is also a project insofar as it is performance. It is the turning of it into images or representing it (projection) and at the same time imagining what it could be or become (projectation).

The Vega Baja as landscape can be considered from several different perspectives:

- as a space which, being close to the river, is marked by exceptional vegetation, by areas shaped by human interaction with its natural resources, and by outstanding views, all of which would be better appreciated once the area and its surroundings are restored

- as a space whose topography emphasizes the uniqueness of the historic city up on the hill, making this stand out against the surroundings. Consequently, it allows clear views of the city from the nearby area and in turn, clear views from the hill out over the open surroundings.

- as a space which is easily seen from the historic city on the hill and whose assets therefore need particular consideration so as to optimize their visual impact.
