The Vega Baja is a large area of Toledo city. It is part of a broad plain that sits between two arms of the Tagus River, lying north of the historic city centre built high on a rocky outcrop.
The area was heavily occupied in Roman times as we know from the 1st century circus and residential villas. Recent excavations have confirmed that it was also the site of the “URBS REGIA”, the capital city of Visigothic Spain.
Archaeological activity is ongoing and part of a new project that also deals with town planning and cultural renewal for the area. Toletum Visigodo is the company set up to manage the enterprise, which is a blend of archaeology, urban planning, landscaping and cultural resource management.
Toletum Visigodo está organizando el Primer Congreso Internacional sobre “Espacios Urbanos en el Occidente Mediterráneo, siglos VI-VIII” entre los días 30 de Septiembre y 3 de Octubre próximos.
The Vega Baja is a territory to the north of the old quarter of the city. It covers an area of over fifty hectares.
Toletum Visigodo
Toletum Visigodo is the public company set up to manage the Vega Baja project in Toledo. It is made up of the City Council of Toledo (40%), the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha (40%) and Cartera Santa Teresa (20%).
Cultural Material
The Vega Baja has been the subject of detailed study on different occasions. These have shown archaeological remains from the Roman and Visigothic periods.
Town Planning and Landscape
The Vega Baja zone is fairly large - about the same size as Toledo’s historic centre.
