In about the middle of the 1980’s, the factory prepared to abandon its military production and allow its premises to be used for other purposes. This process was completed in 1998 with the signing of an agreement between the Ministry of Defence and Toledo City Council. The Council took over the factory complex and reclassified the land around it as suitable for residential use, then handed over the Arms Factory land and buildings to the University of Castile-La Mancha.
In 1998, the University began redeveloping almost 12,000 square metres of industrial premises to provide a campus in Toledo for its department of technology. Environmental schemes including energy provision and air-conditioning for the complex were put into place too.
Between 1999 and 2005, 35,000 square metres of industrial premises had been redeveloped, and the urban system and infrastructure consolidated.
